Jim McNulty was handed his County debut as the Hatters looked to win their fourth-consecutive League 2 game.

The former Macclesfield defender came in for James Tunnicliffe who dropped to the bench.

Jim Gannon also changed both his wide midfield player. Anthony Pilkington was unavailable with a thigh strain whilst David Poole dropped to the bench.

Leon McSweeney started his first game on the right with Adam Griffin recalled on the left.

Michael Rose smashed home a wonderful free-kick from the edge of the penalty area to put County 1-0 up after just 2 minutes to send the Edgeley Park faithful into a frenzy.

Despite taking an early lead The Hatters were struggling to get hold of the game though, with a few mis-placed passes in the opening exchanges. That said, there were many positives. Leon McSweeney was impressing, with some exciting runs and a willingness to get 'stuck in'. Liam Dickinson was also having a good game as he carved open the Stanley defence like a knife through butter. Meanwhile Raynes and McNulty seemed to be striking up an understanding at the back.

Ian Craney, signed for £75,000 from Swansea this week, had a shot from inside the area that went just wide of the post as Stanley tried to get back into the game.

County went close at the other end when Dickinson flicked on for Griffin, whose snap-shot went just wide.

Accrington were certainly not going down without a fight and showed why they had been doing so well this season. Hotshot Roscoe D'Sane's attempt from inside the area beat keeper Conrad Logan, fortunately for County it trickled just wide as The Hatters retained their lead.

Ian Dunbavin's eagerness to play some football, rather than stay on his line was entertaining The Hatters fans and had Accrington on tenterhooks. The shouts of 'shoot' were prevalent around the ground.

On the half hour, Liam Dickinson launched a blistering volley from the edge of the area that went just over the bar and moments later Michael Rose had a pop that trickled just wide of the post.

Some exciting football from The Hatters five minutes before the break saw Adam Griffin burst into the box. He found McSweeney in space and the Irishman delivered a wonderful ball to Elding, but Dunbavin was equal to it.

At the other end Andrew Proctor had a shot that Logan just gathered.

Moments before the break County nearly scored twice. First of all McSweeney delivered a delightful ball for Griffin at the far post that went just wide and then Jason Taylor's burst into the box and powerful shot was blocked by Dunbavin.

County finally doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time when Anthony Elding headed home Rose's corner.

Second Half

The Hatters were dominant after the break, comfortably keeping the visiting forwards at bay.

County tried to find a third that would inevitably kill the game off. Leon McSweeney went close with a deflected volley and Dickinson from a corner ball.

At the other end Ian Craney had a shot from the edge of the area that went high and wide. Shaun Whalley also had an effort 10 minutes from time that went well over.

The County defence, with a youthful look to it were outstanding today. Michael Raynes in particular looked to have now fully recovered from injury and was clearly becoming a real asset for the football club with his solid display. The selection headache facing Gannon is an envious one.

This was a very professional performance from the Hatters who were clinical when asked and didn't allow Stanley to hurt them. Results like this, when you do not play your very best count at the end of the season.
