Jim Gannon named the same eleven that won at Lincoln last Saturday.

The County chief made changes on the bench, though, bringing in Johann Smith his midweek signing from Bolton and fit-again Shaleum Logan. Adam Proudlock and Adam Griffin made way.

County started well and their were appeals for an early free-kick when Liam Dickinson was held back. Tommy Rowe went close with a diving header from a superb Michael Rose cross moments later, but Johnny Brain punched the ball over.

County were ahead on the 10th minute when Jason Taylor smacked the ball home from ten yards out, when Anthony Pilkington's corner was only half cleared by the Macc defence.

Macc were not troubling The Hatters as the home side had a lot of the early possession. The Silkmen's best effort came when Martin Gritton headed on target on the 30th minute to ironic applause.

Anthony Pilkington's wonderful run down the wing nearly produced a second for the rampant Hatters when his cross met the on-running Liam Dickinson, but the top-scorer's 18 yard drive went narrowly wide.

The Hatters were producing some wonderful stuff in the middle of the park and a move that nearly allowed Tommy Rowe a breakthrough had the home fans on their feet, but the young winger could not produce the clinical finish inside the area.

County were buzzing, but they struggled to find a second that would have ultimately killed the game off. Rowe's long-range effort epitomised County's frustration as the game headed for half-time.

Second Half

Jason Taylor scored his second of the night moments after the restart with a shot from inside the area following a poor Johnny Brain clearance.

At the other end Ash Williams nearly scored an own goal, which would have allowed Macc an unfair way into the game. Moments later, Rowe's darting run very nearly produced a third goal but his effort was blocked by Sean Hessey. Pilkington's follow up meanwhile, went well over.

Rowe wasted a golden chance, when Pilkington delivered a wonderful ball into the area but the young winger's effort went well over. It was to be Pilkington's last contribution of the game as he was withdrawn through injury and this marked a debut for Johann Smith.

Dickinson's darting run and deflected effort nearly brought a third, but the nervous Brain caught. Minutes later, Dickinson headed wide as the home side went in search of a third goal that would kill proceedings.

As the game entered its climax Macc tried to desperately  get something out of the game but County held firm. County had chances of their own, but could not find the clinical touch.
