MK Dons were first out of the traps and they created the best opening chance of the game when Danny Swailes header clattered against the tp of the crossbar.
At the other end, County had a marginal offside decision against them, after Liam Dickinson had found the in-form Tommy Rowe in space, much to the disgust of the Hatters faithful.
Former Dons midfielder, Dominic Blizzard went close on two occasions in what was becoming a fiercely fought contest.
Most of the game was happening in the middle of the park, with Jason Taylor, Blizzard and Gary Dicker again looking solid.
Dickinson and Shaleum Logan combined to create a good chance on the 22nd minute when the on-loan right back fed Dickinson in the area, but from a tight angle the leading marksman went high and wide.
As news filtered through that Peterborough United were winning at Hereford United, Dickinson got on the end of a good through ball to slide The Hatters in front, sending the home fans into wonderland.
County's celebrations would be cut short though when Keith Andrews set up a chance for Mark Wright who curled the ball past John Ruddy from the edge of the area just moments later.
A mis-placed pass nearly allowed Jim McNulty the opportunity to strike from a few yards out, but the danger was cleared as the scoreline remained level.
Aaron Wilbraham had a tame shot at the other end, but as the seconds ticked away of this first period it was clear that this game was still anyone's.
Second Half
Jude Stirling went close to scoring an own goal when he sliced a clearance over his own cross bar, as the Hatters went in search of a winner.
And they had the lead again on the 57th minute when Adam Proudlock scored just seconds after his introduction, after good work from Dominic Blizzard. With his first touch of the ball he beat the 'keeper with a terrific shot from the edge of the box.
MK Dons grabbed an equaliser in quick fashion, just like the first, when Alan Navarro slotted the ball home after an initial block from John Ruddy.
The Hatters went close to getting their noses back in front from two consecutive corner balls as County tried to claim all three points.
Rowe was looking as impressive as ever and he should have won a free-kick on the edge of the area when he was pulled down, but the referee waved away the appeals.
Willie Gueret then made a brilliant save to keep out Taylor's header from Proudlock's corner.
At the other end Lewington went close to giving Dons the lead but his effort went well wide from just a few yards out. Ruddy made a good save moments later to deny Andrews a second goal.
Wilbraham went marginally wide as Dons tried to secure their promotion. A mistake by Owen moments, who mis-conrolled a throw in, later allowed Andrews a run in on goal and he superbly chipped the ball beyond Ruddy.
County went agonisingly close to grabbing their third when a sea of bodies rose for a corner ball but the away side defended resolutely.
The game was beginning to take a nasty turn with a glut of cards being handed out as both sides started to come to blows.
County pressed to the end and forced an almighty scramble after another dangerous corner but after three blocks the ball was gratefully cleared.
