Match Report

County were boosted by the return of Rob Clare who missed last Saturday's Cheshire derby against Macclesfield with a calf strain.

The former England Under-20 skipper trained on Thursday and declared himself fit to resume his partnership with Ashley Williams at the heart of the Hatters defence.

Tony Dinning was available again after serving a one-match ban against the Silkmen but, on the flip side, Gannon lost the services of Adam Griffin through illness.

County piled on some of the early pressure as they won two corners in quick succession, Wycombe by contrast saw little of the ball.

Jermaine Easter, booed from the outset by his former admirers looked the sharpest and it was he who forced a corner that nearly resulted in a goal from Tommy Mooney.

Despite County's dominance, the away team forced another penalty when Stefan Oakes shot from distance and it took a good save from Spencer to deny The Chairboys the lead.

At the other end, some good touch football between Poole and Proudlock allowed the former Wolves striker time and space to deliver a good dipping volley that went just over.

County went desperately close on the 20th minute mark when Tes Bramble put a low cross into the box, but the ball just evaded the on running Proudlock.

Seconds later Stephen Gleeson evaded the offside trap and with just the keeper to beat, his low shot hit the post and went out of danger.

County, were in the groove now and when Tony Dinning pulled the ball down in the area, their was a mini scramble for the ball, resulting in a goal kick.

GOAL! Unbelievably County were behind though on the 35th minute when Jermaine Easter was given the time and space to deliver a good header into the bottom left of goal from 12 yards out.

It nearly got worse for County seconds later when Matt Bloomfield broke into the box and his low shot from the left wing, evaded Spencer, but luckily went just wide.

At the other end, Adam Proudlocks powerful shot looked to be heading home, but for a good save from Jamie Young.

GOALCounty were awarded a penalty when David Poole was grounded on the 43rd minute, although to be fair it had looked as if the Wycombe defender won the ball. Regardless, Adam Proudlock converted to put County deservedly back into the game.

Second Half

The fiery climax of the first half spilled onto the pitch, Mooney the main instigator, and when the away skipper lost his footing from a well placed Easter pass, the delight of the home fans was plain to see.

Wycombe created the best chances of the first 15 minutes, when first Stefan Oakes skied a golden opportunity when The Chairboys were awarded a free kick from the edge of the area. Then moments later it took a scissor kick volley from Keith Briggs to clear the decks.

At the other end Briggs went marginally close to getting County's noses in front when he ghosted in at the far post from a Gleeson corner ball, unfoortunately he went just wide.

GOAL! County had their noses in front with a wonderful second. David Poole won the ball from a Spencer goal kick and found the injured Gleeson in space, the on loan man fed Proudlock and the in-form front man finished in style. It was to be Gleeson's last contribution though, as he was replaced by Malcolm seconds later.

County started to put some good football together now, and they were just off the mark when Adam Le Fondre fed a good ball into the box that just evaded man of the match, Jason Taylor.

County didn't rest on their laurels and went in search of a third, but in the end their one goal advantage, despite some late pressure was enough to take them into the hat with the big boys, roll on Man Utd...
