Match Report

Jim Gannon name the same team for the third consecutive game for the crunch clash against play-off rivals Wycombe Wanderers.

The County boss also named the same bench that was on duty at Peterborough last Saturday.

County soon had the Carling Cup giantkillers on the back foot and Jason Taylor brought a good save out of Ricardo Batista on 1 minutes. The 'keeper did well to turn his low 20yard drive around the post.

Ten minutes later the Hatters carved the visitors apart. Taylor played a reverse pass to David Poole who crossed the ball across the six-yard box. The ball took a deflection away from both Anthony Elding and Anthony Pilkington and went behind for a corner.

The Chairboys relief, though, was short lived. Stephen Gleeson took the flag kick and picked out Elding who powered a header past Batista.

Just after the half-hour another Gleeson corner was half cleared to Pilkington on the edge of the box. Unfortunately the former Atherton Collieries striker pulled his shot wide form the edge of the box.

The visitors burst into life on 37 minutes with a snap shot from Tommy Mooney. The 30-yard drive, though, posed no problems for Wayne Hennessey.

County were soon back in business at the other end and Elding and Proudlock combined to work the ball into the box. Poole, though, couldn't quite manage to get on the end of it.

The Hatters should have doubled their advantage five minutes before the break when Elding played Proudlock through. The striker didn't get enough on his shot, though, and Baptista made the save.

County continued to threaten before half-time. Proudlock's through ball was just a yard to far for Elding and Pilkington then saw a deflected shot saved.

Half time: County 1 Wycombe 0

The Chairboys made a triple substitution during the break but within a minute of the re-start the Hatters doubled their advantage.

Elding found Poole down the right who rifled the ball into the box to present Gleeson with a tap in.

Three minutes later a poor backpass from Golbourne went straight o Elding. The big striker was disappointed when his powerful drive was well off target.

In a rare Wycombe attack Mooney flashed a 2-0yard drive just wide.

Michael Rose had a chance to repeat his heroics at Peterborough last week on 62 minutes. He got his free kick around the wall but Baptista made the save.

Fifteen minutes from time two substitutes combined to create another chance. Adam Griffin fed the ball down the left channel to Tes Bramble who pulled his left foot shot wide.
