Jim Gannon made one change from the side that ground out a vital promotion point at Sincil Bank on Saturday.
Joe Lewis came off the bench to replace Wayne Hennessey following his return to Wolves.
It was the 19-year-old's Football League debut.
Liam Dickinson also kept his place alongside Anthony Elding in attack. However, the former Woodley Sports striker faces a three-match ban if County's appeal against his red card at Lincoln is unsuccessful.
County looked fired up for this one and they created a number of openings in the first few minutes. The best chance came when Liam Dickinson tried an overhead volley from the edge of the area.
Dickinson was again involved when he found Elding in space, but David Artell read the danger and cleared the ball. Elding had another attempt well saved on the 12-minute mark, when Danby gathered his attempted back heel.
Moments later a good run from David Poole found Anthony Pilkington in space, but the young winger did not have the ruthless streak to finish off a good opportunity.
County had a blatant handball turned down on the 15th minute, much to the dismay of the County players and the vociferous Blue & White Army.
GOAL! The Hatter's took a well-deserved lead on the 22nd minute, in rather fortunate circumstances. David Poole found Anthony Pilkington on the edge of the area and the young winger put in a low shot that was initially blocked by Danby, but ricocheted into the back of the net. The delight, and relief for all was plain to see.
Pilkington almost doubled the Hatter's lead with a similar effort on the half hour, but this time Danby touched the ball past the near post.
Anthony Elding almost got on the scoresheet when Anthony Pilkington teed him up from 18 yards out, and it took a spectacular save from Danby to deny the curling volley.
County were playing some really nice stuff, as Chester struggled to get into the game, sparking two substitutions on the half hour from Mark Wright. In fact by this point, they hadn't managed a shot in anger.
Gareth Owen and Anthony Elding both went close with shots from just a few yards out, that were never going to trouble the Chester keeper as they went in search of a deserved second goal.
GOAL! County doubled their lead 2 minutes into the second half, when Liam Dickinson was pulled down on the edge of the area. Adam Griffin whipped in a powerful cross that was met at the far post by Tony Dinning, sending the home fans into dreamland.
County nearly made it three, when Ashley Williams delivered a powerful ball into the area. David Poole got on the end of it, but his volley went narrowly wide of the post.
Joe Lewis was called into the game for the first time on the 72nd minute when one-time County target, Simon Yeo found himself one on one with the on-loan keeper but Lewis blocked the potential danger with his leg. The follow up from Wilson was a poor one.
Moments later Yeo performed the same trick down the left wing and he delivered the ball to an unmarked Paul Rutherford who headed over the bar.
County were still creating some good chances and Pilkington very nearly had his second of the afternoon when his snapshot from a Proudlock volley went just wide of the post.
Anthony Elding's moment of magic nearly brought a third goal seconds later. A wicked volley from 25 yards out, tricked Danby but went agonisingly wide of the post, smashing the side hoardings just beyond his far post.
In the dying moments, Anthony Pilkington crossed out wide to Elding, who couldn't quite direct the effort goalwards.
In the end two goals were enough as The Hatters, got their promotion campaign back on track.
