BEES' MARATHON JOURNEY
Posted on: Fri 02 May 2008
For most Brentford fans travelling up to Cheshire for tomorrow's end-of-season game, they can sit back in their coach seats and look forward to simply enjoying a game of football.
But for one group, the arduous journey already began after their last home game, as they're walking the entire 176 miles in the name of charity.
Brentford fans have already had similar walks to Brighton and Hartlepool in previous seasons, raising over £20,000 for their Supporters' Trust, Bees United. And it is because, like County, Brentford are owned by their supporters, that this particular journey was chosen. With the recent furore over the Premiership's proposed "39th Game", and billionaire getting rid of popular managers, it's felt that it's more important than ever to highlight the fans and their importance to the game.
Dan Levy, a member of County's Trust board, said: "The long distance walking of Brentford's fans is inspiring, and helps to remind us all that football is about fans. County and Brentford have a lot in common - we are both fan-owned neighbourhood clubs close to large and impersonal premiership giants - and we look forward to welcoming the Bees in May"
The walkers are aiming to raise money not only for Bees United, but for the Paul Levitt Foundation. Paul, who is a Physio at the Centre of Excellence at the Brentford Football Club Community Sports Trust, was diagnosed with a brain tumour in his thirties and a proportion of the money raised will be donated to his charity, which supports Cancer Research organisations throughout the country.
"Together fans can make a real difference to the way football as an industry treats its customers" says Natasha Judge, Fundraising Director at Bees United, "It's vital that Brentford supporters all pull in the same direction, that way the club will ultimately go on to be a success".
Stockportcounty.com, and everyone at the club, will be wishing them a warm welcome, and hope they enjoy the game as they finally get to sit down and rest!
