Jim Gannon made three changes for the visit of big-spending Peterborough.
Gaz Owen returned after injury to replace Michael Raynes at the back.
Dom Blizzard was preferred to Greg Tansey in midfield with Adam Proudlock coming in for Leslie Thompson in attack.
County lost the toss as they attacked the Cheadle End in this eagerly anticipated match between two of the early season favourites.
Adam Griffin had the first chance of the afternoon when his fierce 18 yard shot was easily saved by Mark Tyler.
James Smith created a good chance for County straight from a Peterborough attack when he won the ball from the middle of the park and passed a through-ball to McNeil. The big striker found Elding out wide, the leading scorer ran with the ball and fed it back to McNeil, but his volley was never going to trouble Tyler.
McNeil went desperately close from a Griffin corner ball, but despite protests he was held back the chance went begging.
At the other end, Mackail-Smith was unlucky not to get on the end of a deep cross ball. After 10 minutes the game was anyone's for the taking.
Elding had a tame effort on the 14th minute when his weak volley from a Proudlock lay down went just over the bar.
It was Peterborough who had the lead on the 16th minute mark when McKail -Smith banged the ball home from inside the County area.
Aaron McLean went desperately close just minutes later when his turn and shot, that beat Logan, went just wide of the post.
Adam Proudlock had an effort for County, but again it was never going to trouble Tyler.
County were back on level terms though when Matty McNeil headed home from a long Jason Taylor throw.
County sustained some heavy pressure after the goal with Conrad Logan having to be at his best to deny The Posh.
Adam Proudlock had a good chance for County when he burst into the box, but his low drive was blocked and the ball bounced out of danger. Moments later a clever flick on by McNeil for Elding went begging, when the popular number nine missed the ball.
At the other end Ashley Williams cleared the ball off the line in what was turning into a thrilling encounter. Moments later the popular captain had to be withdrawn through injury and McNeil replaced him at centre-back.
The Posh grabbed a wonderful goal out of nothing when McLean curled a powerful 18 yard effort from the edge of the area.
Second Half
Adam Proudlock was replaced at the break by Greg Tansey. Blizzard moved to defence and McNeil returned to his striking berth.
Anthony Elding had a couple of goal scoring chances when he got on the end of a McNeil lay down but could not pull the trigger. Moments later he headed just off target.
At the other end County had a few nervy moments, as Charlie Lee and Aaron McLean created good chances.
Jason Taylor had a powerful shot spilled by Tyler on the 55th minute as County went in search of an equaliser.
Liam Dickinson's surging run nearly bared fruit when he found McNeil in space but the big striker could not get to the ball.
Dickinson made a hash of a golden chance minutes later when McNeil, this time the maker, fed the ball to him but from just a few yards out he blazed over.
County thought they had an equaliser when Anthony Elding volleyed from a few yards out following a flick on by McNeil, unfortunately it was ruled out for offside.
Some patient build up play by Griffin, allowed Tansey to have a shot on goal. The resulting kick went just wide of the left hand post as the time ticked away.
Despite pressure from County this was to be Peterborough's day. County now need a win midweek to get their season going again.
